This study assesses the change in fish exploitation patterns of the sábalo fisheries of the lower Paraná River basin based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators. From historical catch records, we recorded a shift from a lightly and moderate exploited status before 2001 to a heavily exploited one, as a result of the development of sábalo exports from 2001 onwards. Channel and floodplain connectivity indices demonstrated that the Paraná exhibited highly favorable hydrological conditions between 1972 and 1999 but more adverse conditions from 1999 to 2009, as a consequence of flood pulses reduction coincident with a fishing mortality increment. A total catch of 15,000 tons, including local consumption, regional market, informal sales, and... |

The analysis of the Argentine fishing fleet (SW Atlantic) evolution as of 1960 allows to explain the major causes of expansion, the crisis in the fisheries and the structural changes of the fleet during the 90's. Different fleet classification criteria focused on fishing capacity, fish landing composition, yields and productivity indices are described. The expansion cycles were associated to the incorporation of fishing vessels, while the 1960-1989 crisis originated in domestic and international economic crisis and changes in the strategy pattern of the fishing countries. The latter was related to overfishing of traditional coastal and demersal fisheries and to the full exploitation of resources such as squid, blue whiting and toothfish incorporated to the... |

Due to the general lack of targeted fisheries on billfish, the resource status of these species within the Indian Ocean has not been analysed in any previous study and currently remains unknown. Nevertheless, significant quantities of billfish are caught annually in the Indian Ocean and, being generally long lived, these species remain vulnerable to overfishing. In this paper preliminary indices of stock availability are presented for the main billfish species based on the catch and effort data pertaining to the Japanese and Taiwanese Indian Ocean longline fisheries. While the indices need to be treated with some caution (due to problems relating to the accuracy of the catch and effort data, and the fact that changes in catchability have not been factored... |

Catch per unit of effort (CPUE)analysis of the Argentine surimi fleet is a routine work to estimate abundance indices of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis. Several analysis of this fishery suggest that, as of the years when intensive fishing by foreign and national fleets started, the resource has suffered a marked decline. When calculating the CPUE it is common practice to take into acount only trips and fishing operations with high catches of the target species fishing operations directed to other species are not considered to avoid underestimations. Therefore, in order to include a percentage of catch of the analyzed species higher than a subjective value, available data are filtered. However, because only operations with high yield are... |

This communication presents a global overview of Atlantic bluefin tuna biology, exploitation and management. The comparison between bluefin tuna and all other tuna species do show that this species is ranking number one among other tunas world wide in a wide range of its resources and fisheries characteristics. Bluefin tuna is for instance the gold winner in the category of fisheries (about 10,000 years of documented fisheries, the highest price in the market, the largest tuna taken), of its peculiar biology (large migration, homing, growth, etc.) and in the category of risks presently faced by the resource, because of its multiple scientific uncertainties still pending, its increasingly serious statistical problems and the heavy political context in the... |

ABSTRACT The sardine Sardinella aurita, fished since 1927, is Venezuela's most significant fishery resource. The national catch reached a record high of 200,000 tons in 2004 but diminished nationally by 50% in 2005 and by 90% on Margarita Island, marking the beginning of a crisis in sardine fishing. Based on indicators of overexploitation, the fishing authority increased the minimum size required for capture and prohibited fishing for three months in 2013. The validity of these measures is studied here. A reduction in size may indicate intensive exploitation, and thus, the records of 28,217 sardines measured between 2002 and 2016 in the southeast region of Margarita Island were examined. Prior to the crisis, in 2003 and 2004, the average size was 195.48... |

Foreign fishing fleets drastically overfished the waters off Namibia before that country gained independence in 1990, according to Paul Nichols, Special Adviser to the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Since then, the Government has taken strong regulatory actions that have brought overfishing under control and allowed depleted fish stocks to rebuild while gaining strong support for the policy among Namibia's commercial fishers. |
